Yahoo, Microsoft Partnership Deal Inked

Microsoft Corp and Yahoo Inc inked a 10-year Web search deal to better compete against market leader Google Inc. The deal, announced on Wednesday, may have a better shot at success than the proposed pact last year between Yahoo Inc and Google Inc.

The long-expected deal effectively means Microsoft's new Bing search engine will be combined with Yahoo's experience attracting advertisers to pose the first serious threat to Google, if the companies get regulatory approval and can make the partnership work.

Under the agreement, Yahoo will use Microsoft's search engine, Bing, on its Web portal, significantly expanding Bing's reach. In return, Yahoo will keep 88 percent of the revenue from search ads for the first half of the 10-year deal.

Gayatri Devi, Rajmata of Jaipur passes away

Charismatic Jaipur royal Rajmata Gayatri Devi, who became an extremely successful politician, breathed her last at Satokben Durlabh Memorial Hospital where she was readmitted on Tuesday for chest infection after she was discharged a few days ago.

Gayatri Devi, the elegant former princess of Cooch Behar who became the maharani of Jaipur and was once considered among the world's most beautiful women.

Jaipur Rajmata Gayatri Devi, a three-time MP and who was once named as ''World's Ten Most Beautiful Women'' by ''Vogue'' magazine, died on Wednesday at her age of 90.

Born on May 23, 1919 as Princess Gayatri Devi of Cooch Behar, she was the third Maharani of Jaipur from 1939 to 1970 through marriage to Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II. To her friends and family she was more commonly known as Ayesha.

Her father, Prince Jitendra Narayan of Cooch Behar, was the younger brother of the Yuvraj (Crown Prince). Her mother as Princess Indira Raje of Baroda, an extremely beautiful princess and a legendary socialite.

Early in her life, her uncle's death led to her father ascending the throne. Gayatri Devi studied at Shantiniketan and later in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she travelled with her mother and siblings, then studied secretarial skills in London School of Secretaries; Brilliantmont and Monkey Club London.

Nokia N86 smartphone launched in India

Nokia has launched the N86 smartphone in the Indian market. The defining feature of this phone is its 8MP in-built camera with a wide-angle lens. The Nokia N86 runs on the open source operating Symbian (S60) system. The maximum resolution offered on Nokia models so far has been 5MP. INS Arihant launched today

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur launched India's own, INS Arihant, the first nuclear-powered submarine on Sunday. A nuclear submarine is one of the most potent weapons.
As India has declared "no first use" of nuclear weapons, the country's weapons system must survive a first strike for retaliation. Therefore, Arihant's primary weapon is stealth as it can lurk in ocean depths of half a kilometre or more and fire its missiles from under the sea.
It will take another two to three years before Arihant is deployed by the navy. And at least another seven years before India is able to build its second nuclear submarine. Arihant's design and capabilities may need fine tuning, which poses many new challenges for the navy.

BCCI should have checked the interviews tapes: Sourav

A few days after Vinod Kambli blamed the Indian board in a reality show for discriminating against him over his skin colour (though he later denied it), former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly too accused the board of adopting double standards over team selection (Sourav also denied it).
The former Indian skipper said that the BCCI should have checked the interviews tapes with the Bengali news channel before reacting so sharply.
Ganguly had sarcastically hinted at being a victim of BCCI’s discrimination in an interview to a Bengali channel.
Ganguly had reportedly criticised the BCCI for having "different rules for different players" in selection matters.
Meanwhile, the former captain also sidestepped questions on whether he had been re-appointed captain of his Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders.
The left-hander had been replaced by New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum this season.

Kargil, a ghost town during the war, was today abuzz with stories of valour and courage of Indian soldiers who took part in 'Operation Vijay' as their famillies descended here to take part in two-day celebrations to mark the victory.
Tears rolled down the faces of family members of the fallen soldiers of Kargil war at the sight of memorials unveiled on Saturday for their loved ones who helped trounce the Pakistani army while colleagues and superiors paid emotional tributes to the heroes.

Global warming is the main cause of high tides

Describing last two days as high tides measuring over 5 metres hit the city's shores, the civic body has warned of similar occurrence for next two-three years because of global warming

and called for steps to stop possible flooding. The civic officials had warned of July 26, 2005-like deluge as the city today witnessed a 5.05 metre high tide, but fortunately heavy rains did not coincide with the tide. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was geared up for the day and had taken several precautionary measures, like evacuating people from low-lying areas.

Kalam files no FIR against Continental Airlines

Delhi Police on Saturday said no first information report (FIR) was filed against Continental Airlines for frisking former president
APJ Abdul Kalam. The government has been claiming that a case was filed against the US carrier.
The frisking of the former president that violates Indian laws created an uproar in parliament when political leaders cutting across party lines had criticised the carrier.

The government had earlier said an FIR has been registered by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) at the IGI Airport police station against staff of the Continental Airlines.

Allaying fears of flooding during Mumbai high tide

India's financial capital of Mumbai was put on a high-tide alert with officials expecting a water rise of up to 197 inches (5 meters).

The Met officials said that as per the civic body, the two days - July 23 and July 24 - when high tide of above 5 metre are expected to hit the shores of the city, chances of heavy rains are very less.

High tides are also forecast from August 19 to 23.
Sea tides are expected to rise 5 meters Friday, 4.9 meters Saturday and 4.7 meters Sunday, according to a bulletin by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.

Disaster Management Cell of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, however, has geared up to handle any situation like 26/7 deluge.

Hoboken Mayor, Peter Cammarano has been arrested as part of a broad inquiry on corruption. Jersey City deputy mayor Leona Beldini and former Jersey City council president L Harvey Smith were also reported to be among those arrested.

Peter Cammarano, a handsome and young, 32-years old, is the new mayor for Hoboken, NJ.

Cammarano allegedly took a bribe in return for giving priority to an undercover FBI informant posing as a real estate developer.

Peter Cammarano III (born July 22, 1977) is the 37th mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey, serving since 2009. He was born in Wayne, New Jersey and attended Boston University and Seton Hall University School of Law. In a 2005 run-off election he was elected Councilman-at-Large in Hoboken[1] and became Hoboken's youngest mayor in 2009.

In 2009 he won the Hoboken mayoral election, though his electoral victory against Dawn Zimmer was not without controversy. His margin of victory was only 161 votes, pulling ahead thanks to absentee and provisional ballots. Zimmer's three running mates won control of the city council despite Cammarano's mayoral victory.

He was sworn at to office on July 1, 2009. Cammarano, who was 31 years old at the time he took office, became the youngest Mayor of Hoboken in history.

Gangubai Hangal (5 March 1913 – 21 July 2009)

Hindustani classical singer Gangubai Hangal passed away at Lifeline Hospital Hubli (Hubballi) in Karnataka at 7.10 a.m on 21st July 2009 at the age of 97. Padma Bhushan award winner singer was recently admitted to hospital and undergoing treatment for chest congestion for the past two days.
Last night, after developed breathing problems, she was shifted to a super speciality hospital Lifeline Emergency Care Centre in Hubli .

Gangubai, one of the most acclaimed exponents of Khyal Gayki of the Kirana gharana, was born in a family of professional musicians in Dharwad in Karnataka.

Winner of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, she mesmerized fans for over six decades with her melodious voice.

Firsr Tata Nano Car to be Handed Over on Friday

Five years after his promise to build a people's car, Ratan Tata will hand over the key of his dream project - the Nano - to its first customer on Friday. Tata Motors Ltd, India's largest vehicles maker.

Chairman Ratan Tata had showcased the Nano at an auto show in New Delhi in January last year, but consumer bookings began only in April this year after the project was delayed due to land disputes at its planned site in the eastern state of West Bengal.

The plant for producing the Nano was shifted to a new site in Gujarat on the west coast, but the first batch of Nanos would come from its car plant in Pantnagar in northern India.

Tata has assured price protection for the first 1,00,000 customers, for whom the cars will be available for Rs 1,00,000 excluding taxes.

Rita Bahuguna Joshi Arrested

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi was on Thursday arrested in Ghaziabad district for allegedly making inflammatory speech against Chief Minister Mayawati. Rita Bahuguna Joshi, was sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Her house was under attack. A portion of her house was set on fire by BSP supporters.
The arrest of Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi and the attack on her house by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers led to a demand for the dismissal of the state government by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party.

12Hr. West Bengal Bandh called by WBPCC

A 12 hourBangla bandh has been called for tomorrow by West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee.

Normal life was disrupted across West Bengal on Thursday as enraged Congress party workers torched buses and obstructed rail and road traffic in protest against the attack on nine Congress MLAs at Dhanno-rukhi village near Mangalkot on Wednesday by the CPM supporters allegedly.

12 govt. buses have been burnt so far in many places in Kolkata city.
In Delhi, Pranab Mukherjee and Mamata Banerjee are expected to meet Home Minister Chidambaram to appraise him about the incident.

CPM has condemned the incident and denied party supporters were involved. CPM secretary Biman Bose has said if any CPM workers were found guilty the party would take action.

Actor Nilu Phule Passes Away

Marathi film and stage actor Nilu Phule died at a hospital. He was 80. Nilu Phule was suffering from cancer of the oesophagus and was admitted to the hospital on July 5. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Just a few weeks ago Anupam Kher had visited Phule to invite him on the get together for their movie Saaransh.
A versatile artiste, Nilu Phule had acted in around 130 films, including some Hindi movies, and a number of Marathi plays.

E. Sreedharan resigns as Delhi Metro chief

E. Sreedharan, managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), resigned from the pos. E. Sreedharan, known world wide as India's 'Metro man', resigned as the chief of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Sunday, taking “moral responsibility” for the collapse of an underconstruction span that killed five people.

Sreedharan, 77, has been at the helm of affairs of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) since its inception and has been instrumental in the completion of the project within the budget and well ahead of schedule.
Known for his efficiency and integrity, the technocrat could not sit quietly as a span of the under-construction elevated route came crashing down in south Delhi Sunday morning, killing five people and wounding 15.
Though he retired way back as member (engineering) of the railway board in June 1990, the government would not let him go and appointed him as the chief of the Konkan Railway that year.
